Don't Stop Believin'
Earlier this week I watched the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. Well, the first 90 minutes or so. I will typically only tune into these shows by happenstance. Its always interesting to see where pop culture stands regarding such a personal and, as Jay-Z so humbly put it, subjective medium like music.
I find it so peculiar that someone can win an award like Album of the Year. No offense to Taylor Swift but in my opinion, you didn't put out the Album of the Year. Maybe it was an album of the year? I am certain that to some people (OK, A LOT of people) it was, but to mark one single album as such just seems irresponsible. Although one of my favorite, if not my favorite, Albums of 2023 did win in a different category, so I guess I can't be too mad at the Recording Academy . Isn't that the point though, to get people arguing over who should and shouldn't win? I am sure it is all driven record labels and whats best for business but it feels so contrived.
Any way, I enjoyed some of the performances and some I thought were just awful and unnecessary. I felt that the in memoriam could have highlighted some in there contributions more than others, but we live in a world where everything needs to be diverse for the sake of diversity. Sorry Annie Lenox, you just don't do it for me.
I guess it was just a reminder that the most important takeaway is that an awards show is just that - a show. Kind of like anything that media sends our way at any given time. Its there for ratings and they just want as many eyeballs as possible, for better or worse. Damn, I just realized they got me...
Now, if you're curious about and want to get a pretty unbiased review of the Top 10 on Spotify's top 50 charts thats pretty fresh, check out my man Rick Beato. He's a successful producer and has an incredible ear. Now, time to go listen to this song and yell at the clouds.
